What Is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychotherapy approach that helps people heal from the emotional distress caused by disturbing life experiences. Originally developed to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), EMDR has since been shown to benefit individuals struggling with a wide range of mental health issues.

“Anybody who has experienced trauma could benefit from EMDR,” said Trisha Miller, a psychotherapist at the Cleveland Clinic. Indeed, EMDR is used to treat not only PTSD but also anxiety, depression, panic attacks, complicated grief, phobias, eating disorders, and addictions (https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/19/well/emdr-therapy.html)

Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR does not require individuals to speak in detail about their trauma. Instead, it works by activating the brain’s natural healing processes through a structured eight-phase protocol. One key component of EMDR is bilateral stimulation—most often eye movements—which appears to help the brain reprocess traumatic memories so that they are no longer emotionally overwhelming. Paying attention to any form of bilateral stimulation also helps anchor the client to the present. One foot in the past and another in the present is a common expression in the EMDR field.

How EMDR Helps:

  • Reduces the intensity of distressing memories
  • Promotes emotional stability and regulation
  • Encourages healthier beliefs about the self
  • Improves daily functioning and relationships

People often report feeling significant relief even after a few sessions. EMDR can be particularly effective for those who feel stuck or overwhelmed by past experiences that continue to impact their lives today.
