You’ve been feeling lonely and crying a lot lately. You feel more anxious and getting things done is much harder these days. When you wake up, you don’t feel rested. You have become irritable and snap at your loved ones. You don’t want to be this way, but you don’t feel in control of your emotions. The world is changing, and you don’t know how to relate to the people around you. You feel disoriented and would like to regain your equilibrium. You don’t trust many people, yet you know deep down that you need to talk to a professional. The current upheaval is bringing old stuff to the surface that you’ve been trying to ignore for a long time.
Your faith is very important to you, and you don’t want to leave it out of your therapy sessions. It is your faith that gives meaning and purpose to your life. You believe that “we live and move and have our being in God,” the bedrock of our existence. You are also convinced that healing comes from God.
You want a therapist who respects and shares your faith and searches for God in your suffering.
As your therapist, I will weave in your faith in my psychological interventions. I believe that psychology and spirituality are two related dimensions. They are meant to be integrated into a holistic approach to human healing and flourishing. In order for me to be a truly integrated therapist, I must be attentive to both of these dimensions in my own life, so that I may honestly permit the grace of God to heal, transform, and operate within my own wounded nature.
I will help you heal from your own wounds and restore health and peace into your daily functioning. I will teach you how to manage your nervous system and your brain. You will acquire various anxiety management techniques and will learn how to examine your thoughts for their accuracy. I will demonstrate mindfulness techniques that will promote psychological and spiritual wellbeing.
Many Christian mystics (e.g. Teresa of Avila) revealed that psychological health is a prerequisite to spiritual development. Together, we will dismantle your false ego and replace it with a sturdy, resilient ego that will carry you through life’s challenges.
